Venetian Rococo Table

This Venetian Rococo style table was created for a style emulation project for a istory of decorative design class. The goal of the project was to produce a work of art inspired by a culture or style covered in the class. The students were broken into groups of different media, and I was placed in the furniture group.

Style and Concept

Our group chose to emulate Venetian Rococo by creating a dark stained trifold tea table. Rococo art is characterized by elegant ornamentation, curved and asymmetrical forms, and graceful movement. Venetian Rococo furniture involves the use of floral motifs and coordination of emphasized woodgrain. It was essential to convey those same concepts in my design to emulate the specific style and culture of the Venetian people.

Construction

The table is constructed entirely of wood. The tabletop is made of plywood and the legs cut from 2 x 4 planks. I cut a circle of wood from a square board and did the necessary calculations needed to stencil the outline of the tabletop. I traced a floral pattern from historical Venetian Rococo furniture constructions and engraved it on the top of the table with a Dremel tool. I painted the carving with gold acrylic before attaching the legs and finishing it with a mahogany stain.
